I just LOVE the East Village, still, for its cafes and restaurants...also wonderful and nearby are the cafes on Macdougal Street, walkable from the East Village, and Washington Square...
This is one of the first places I came to in NYC and while I don't want to go down there all the time I still do love it. There is so much to do here, so much to see...nice to go in and out of the streets from about 12th on down to Houston (which divides 1st Street from named streets on the Lower East Side...).
